You Get What You Need
“You can’t always get what you want.”
Yes, those are the words that keep running through my head. Today. The past week. The past month. Let’s be honest. The past many months.
We had a plan last night to get up and visit a new church this morning. I was excited. The place was chosen. The time was known in advance. All family members were aware of the plan. And my “sabbatical” is getting a little weary, so I’m ready for a little routine.
I woke up and prepared for the plan as planned.
But that’s where the plan stopped.
Twenty minutes before we needed to leave I realized there was no way we could possibly make it on time. I needed a new plan, but I wanted the plan we prepared yesterday.
I came up with a back-up plan in my mind, and encouraged everyone ready.
Once everyone was ready, a different plan was suggested. A plan that has become our go to plan when other plans don’t work out.
I can’t lie. I wanted to go to church more than anything else this morning, and that’s what we were going to do, but I was very disappointed that we weren’t going to church they way I wanted.
And then at the end of a worship song, a scripture flashed on a screen. A scripture that is very well-known to me. A scripture that means a lot to me personally.
My mind stopped feeling sorry for itself and started focusing on worship.
The service went on to be something I didn’t want to hear, but needed to hear. Something I had heard before in a very personal way and absolutely am in need of hearing again now.
And as I sat and reflected, the chorus of an absolutely non-Christian song filled my mind. “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need.”
The things I want right now? Yeah, I’m not getting any of them. As a matter of fact, I’ve been losing some of the things I want to hold on to. Yet in the midst of it all, somehow, God has managed to send someone to literally give me just what we need.
