Praying for God to Steal My Show

You know what, God, this is so NOT what I had in mind, but if this is the direction You want to go, well…

Have you ever been there?

I was there last week. Twice. A positive situation (that I didn’t think I was qualified to have handed to me) and a negative situation that almost scared me away, both in relation to the same thing.

Sunday morning I got up still processing the events from past few days and a newer Toby Mac song popped into my mind.

Another cold night
Another late flight
It’s almost show time, and Diverse City’s waitin’ on me
We got a packed house, the crowd is callin’ out
They want the beat to drop, but what we really need is You

[Chorus:]
If You wanna steal my show, I’ll sit back and watch You go
If You got somethin’ to say, go on and take it away
Need You to steal my show, can’t wait to watch You go
So take it away

So now the crowd is hype, that you showed up tonight
Anticipatin’, cravin’ somethin’ more than smoke and lights
So I’ll step out the way, I’ll give You center stage
Alight
Spotlight
Give ’em what they came for …

[Chorus]

When You arrive, we come to life
Our hearts collide, they’re beating in the same time
You’re comin’ through, all eyes on You
Our hearts collide, they’re beating in the same time, beating in the same time

No matter who we are, no matter what we do
Every day we can choose to say …

[Chorus]

My life
My friends
My heart
It’s all Yours, God
Take it away
My dreams
My fears
My family
My career
Take it away
Take it away
It’s all Yours, God
Take it away
Take it away
It’s You I wanna live for

Now, I try not to sing along when this song comes on the radio. Note the word TRY.

I’m not sure God can “steal” the show from us. I mean, it’s HIS show. All of it. It’s already His.

The first time I heard it I thought maybe it was about something outside and the writer was talking about the stars and the sky “stealing” the show. That isn’t what the song is about.

Imagine my surprise when walking through my own journey and thoughts about that journey the lyrics that freely flowed through my mind were the words from the chorus above.

I started something with the intention of bringing Glory to God. It went in an entirely different direction and yet the results were something only God could have brought about.

Did He steal my show? Absolutely.

Sometimes we set out to do things for God, big or small, and we forget that our plans aren’t always God’s plans. Why are we always so surprised when He shows up?

I got to thinking about the artist who sings this song. He gets hired as an entertainer to sing to crowds. Thankfully he sings to crowds who expect him to lead them in worship and sing praises unto God. However, still he gets paid to entertain people. It’s his job.

When I think about worship, I think about the Holy Spirit leading and moving. I think about authentic worship. I don’t think about being an entertainer.

These Christian artists have to put on a “show” whether they “feel” it or not. Just like me being a teacher, they show up each night with a lesson plan, a set list, a list of scriptures to read, a specific testimony to share. They show up to work.

But some nights, something else happens. The second song just won’t stop playing, and a scripture they didn’t even know they knew flows from their being followed by a testimony they’ve never felt led before, and before they know it what used to be a mosh pit is full of worshippers lying prostate crying out Jesus for revival and healing of our nation. And the set list? Just went out the window when the mighty rushing wind of the Holy Spirit came bursting in.

Yeah, sometimes God does show up BIG and just steals the show.

I want to stop being so surprised when He shows up, though. As a matter of fact, I want to start inviting Him to show up on a regular basis.

What do you think that would look like?

God no longer stealing the shows we plan, but taking back the show that has always been His simply because we asked Him to take it back? I imagine it would be so powerful and glorious that we’d have to take off our shoes to stand in His presence. I imagine that it would be so incredible that we would stop being worried about what others thought and simply focus on what He thought.

“If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

Luke 11:11-13

Yeah, I think if I ask Him to show up and take back what’s rightfully His, I think He’ll do it in a big way!

Enjoy a glimpse into Toby Mac’s clean up time and an explanation behind “Steal My Show” before listening to the song. Maybe you too will feel led to invite God to steal YOUR show.
