Today while preparing for the day a thought crossed my mind, “Are you on mission?” That’s an interesting question! My silent response was, “What’s a mission? A task I need to get done?”
I was very surprised (in a good way) when I looked up the word mission. Out of 5 definitions, the first 3 refer to religion! The fourth is the answer I came up with to answer my own “What’s a mission” question. The 5th is broad and, in my opinion. leads right back to religion.
Am I on mission? At the time my “mission” was to get cleaned up and ready to leave the house. I was on mission at the time. I was focused on the goal, taking steps insured to complete the goal, and managed not to get distracted by things going on around me.
Yep, I guess you could say I was on mission. But, I’m not sure that’s the answer the voice was looking for.
Ok, God, am I on mission? I don’t know. What mission am I supposed to be on?
So, there it is. There’s the real question. What is my mission???? What am I supposed to be doing, on purpose, for God right now? Um, attending church? Leading worship? Planning Vacation Bible School.
Those are all worthy activities, Carrie, but what is your mission?
I’m shocked that I can’t come up with an answer that makes even the least bit of sense. What is my mission?
Joshua 22:3 (New International Version)
3 For a long time now—to this very day—you have not deserted your brothers but have carried out the mission the LORD your God gave you.
Ah, God gives the mission.
18 And he sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; make war on them until you have wiped them out.’
Ah, God gives directions for the mission.
1 Samuel 15:19-21 (New International Version)
19 Why did you not obey the LORD ? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the eyes of the LORD ?”
20 “But I did obey the LORD,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the LORD assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king. 21 The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the LORD your God at Gilgal.”
Oh, you have to follow the instructions to the letter…no deviating.
Isaiah 48:15 (New International Version)
15 I, even I, have spoken;
yes, I have called him.
I will bring him,
and he will succeed in his mission.
Oh, God calls, God carries, God will succeed.
Acts 12:25 (New International Version)
25When Barnabas and Saul had finished their mission, they returned from[a] Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.
Oh, the mission will have an end.
Why, Carrie, did you just walk us through that odd set of verses?
Well, a very disturbing thought hit me during our Sunday School class Sunday morning. I’m sure it’s not the first time I’ve thought this, but Sunday it hurt. Sometimes we get to a point where we stop looking for the mission, the call. We are so busy doing the things we do for God, that we don’t realize He has moved on to something else.
Sunday morning I thought, “Well, God, I’m doing this, which you called me to do!”
Could He be calling me to something else? Why? I don’t feel that I’ve done what He wanted me to do yet. I can’t see any good, actually, that has come from this calling. I can’t say I “want” to do it anymore, but I haven’t until right this week felt like YOU were telling me not to do it anymore.
Ok, so enough rambling…here’s the thought: As Christians we don’t arrive, we move from mission to mission.
EEKKKK!!! I’m a planner, a scheduler, and I like to look several years out. Surely God wouldn’t just up and change His mind and switch my mission????
Ok, so now I’m starting to sound like Jonah. Here’s my question for you. Are you on mission? Do you know what God’s CURRENT mission for you is? Has God ever seemingly changed your mission mid-stream????
