3 Reasons You Want to be Overwhelmed
Positive or negative connotation?
How many moms reading this are immediately thinking of their to-do list for this beautiful Sunday?
There are groceries to buy for the week, laundry to do, a house to clean, reports for work to finish up (or do from scratch if you’re like me), weekly schedule to review and plan, make sure homework is done and packed, pack lunches, prep meals, oh, and at sometime you’d like to relax, enjoy the freshly arrived spring weather outside with the kids.
No way you’re getting it all done.
Add in the stress of getting everyone up, showered, dressed, and to church on time, and well, we can be one of the most fake-smiling, unholy groups in church on any given Sunday morning.
My guilt overwhelms me–it is too heavy to bear. Psalms 38:4
And when we find ourselves packed into the minivan, running ten minutes late for church, arguing over whose fault it is we’re so late this week, we feel guilt sucking the air out of our lungs as we realize we’re desecrating the Lord’s day.
Where is our JOY, our PEACE, our LOVE?
We have let our time set aside for worshiping become another item on the to-do list, rather than the intimate date it was intended to be.
When the crowd saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with awe, and they ran to greet him. Mark 9:15
Are we barely dragging ourselves to Jesus, or are we so overwhelmed by His presence that we can’t stop ourselves from running to greet Him?
I’ve been able to answer that question from both sides.
When we are barely dragging ourselves to Him, it’s tough.
Hope? Yeah, it’s worn thin. Revival? So far from mind that we probably wouldn’t even recognize it.
I think of God, and I moan, overwhelmed with longing for his help. Psalms 77:3
Overwhelmed doesn’t seem like such a good thing at this place. Until we hit true rock bottom and cry out for His help.
And every time. Right on time. He shows up.
Though we are overwhelmed by our sins, you forgive them all. Psalms 65:3
And once we realize we have been forgiven, even for our guilt that we shouldn’t have been dragging around with us, a different kind of overwhelmed shows up.
No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. Romans 8:37
Not a win where we barely scrape by. Not a tie. Not a chance the opponent forfeited.
Through Christ there will be an OVERWHELMING victory when we allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by His Spirit.
I am overwhelmed with joy in the lord my God! For he has dressed me with the clothing of salvation and draped me in a robe of righteousness. I am like a bridegroom dressed for his wedding or a bride with her jewels. Isaiah 61:10
Overwhelmed with JOY!
He has dressed me for His presence. I am beautiful in His sight because He loved me enough to sacrifice His son for my sin.
That is more than enough reason to be overflowing with joy.
Father God, daddy, I pray that you will overwhelm me with your Spirit this morning. Thank you so much for the love you showed me when you sent your Son to die for me. Father, I pray that you will cleanse all pride from my heart and mind. Fill my being with a desire to love others they way you love them. Overwhelm my soul with joy and worship for the One who spoke this world into motion. Father God, use the words from my mouth to show Yourself to all whom I come in contact with. Here am I, send me.
This post was inspired by Big Daddy Weave’s, “Overwhelmed“. When I find a song in my head from the moment that I rise, it’s usually a reminder from God Himself. If you have watched the video and been moved by what you see, please consider visiting the Compassion International link on the right side of my website page. There are children waiting for you to adopt them. If we see them all, it is overwhelming. However, if we look at it as going after the one, God can overwhelm a community by the one we choose to make a difference for.
